If you haven’t heard already, 2 days ago Typhoon Ondoy hit the Philippines and it hit hard.  2 days ago, around 10pm the rain started coming in and I thought, “Oh well, it’s just another typhoon.  This will pass by pretty quickly.” I woke up at 6am the next day and found that the rain had not stopped.  Instead, the winds picked up and I was actually scared that the sliding glass doors that I have that lead out to my 3rd floor balcony would shatter and crash in.  For the rest of the day it would continue to rain, and actually it still is raining today, just with not as much force as yesterday.  My building’s water-pressure was temporarily down for the good part of yesterday so I just stayed in my room and hoped that things would subside.

More than 60 people have died thus far and many others are missing.  Most of the damage that I’ve heard of is coming from Manila and parts of Luzon.  I’ve seen terrible footage online of people being stranded on the roofs of their houses and cars being washed away by the terrible flood waters.  Many of my friends were trapped for a good part of yesterday and some of them were stuck in traffic for the longest time.  Emergency hotlines were filled with calls from people in distress.  I couldn’t even leave my room for the most part yesterday because the rain was so bad.

Luckily I live in Laguna, which is higher up than most places and wasn’t hit that bad with the storm.  Besides some pretty heavy rain and winds we haven’t experienced the damage that some parts of Manila have received.  My heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by this typhoon and also to those who are still suffering from it.

Here is a sample of what’s been happening:

I wish there was something I could do to help, but right now all I can do is donate to the relief efforts that are taking place all over the Philippines.  I really hope that it helps.

Again, I hope all of you in the Philippines who have been affected stay safe.  Please be safe.

(P.S. — The rains and winds are picking up again… I fear that the typhoon will cause more damage today… I really, really hope that’s not the case…)
