So this is the place where I guess I have to talk about myself… interesting.
Essentially, my blog here at JoNPiNoY Proudctions is about me and my exploits here in the Philippines as a Filipino-American, with some focus on my love for art and anything and everything Asian and Asian American related. More particularly, The Filipino Vet Student is a blog that I keep regularly here and, not surprisingly, is focused on my life at veterinary school at the University of the Philippines: Los Banos (UPLB).
I guess a little background on me is in order. I’m currently 24 years young, hailing from New York City. I was born in Brooklyn, but Queens is where I grew up for most of my life. I graduated from a specialized high school there and then headed to a few state colleges before finally settling at Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for my sophomore year. I graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences and a concentration in Asian American studies.
In 2008, I started my time in UPLB as a full-time veterinary student. Since I came here, I’ve begun to learn more about my own Filipino culture and what it’s really like living here in the Philippines. I’ve still got a lot to learn in terms of becoming a veterinarian and learning more about my culture, but I’m making progress and I’m enjoying it, and that’s essentially why I chronicle my life here in The Filipino Vet Student blog.
There’s a heavy Asian element to this site as well, as a lot of it is dedicated to Asian and Asian American popular culture and contemporary issues. Since I was in high school I’ve always had a fascination with Asian people and their cultures. While at Cornell I served as the past Publicity Chair and Vice-President External of the Cornell Filipino Association and also served as the President of the Asian Pacific Americans for Action club, which was a pan-Asian organization that focused on educating the public on Asian and Asian American contemporary issues and problems. For two years I also was a National Director for the Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue (FIND, Inc.) where we set up conferences to educate people about Filipino culture and social problems in the Philippines. A part of my decision in coming here to the Philippines was to learn more about my culture first-hand. I also love to listen to Asian music, so you’ll also find my thoughts and reviews of different groups here as well.
There’s a lot of artwork here too, as I used to be an active artist. While I still dabble a little bit in drawing, I use this site to archive some of my work. For awhile in 2004 I was part of an American manga company called MusaJump which showcased their work for a few years at Otakon, one of the largest anime conventions on the USA’s eastern seaboard. I also started a web-comic way back in 2005 called the Pillow Book Chronicles which continued into 2008 and had a small following, but since then I’ve stopped work on that project to focus on school. Now and then I still post up artwork and you can find some of my pieces here on this site.
So that’s essentially it! I hope my experiences on this site prove useful and entertaining to you as it is to me. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to drop me a line. You can e-mail me at jon [at] jonpinoy [dot] com or use the Contact Me form.
